5 Things Moms Should Consider When Buying a Car

The days of buying a car based on looks are long gone for me! That used to make car shopping easy. As a mom, I have specific concerns that come along with purchasing a car. I definitely want a car that’s comfortable and cool to drive but there are also other factors that will strongly influence my purchase.I’m making a plan to buy a car in the next year and I’ve been brainstorming the things I need to know about buying a car and the features that work for my family. After some thought, here are 5 things that I think every mom should know and consider when buying a car:

1) Make sure you get the car that is right for you!

Do you have six kids in your family? Do you have pets or travel often and need luggage space? Figure out what sized vehicle you would need to make sure that it is literally, a good fit for you.

2) Safety features-

Safety is definitely the most important factor when buying a new car.

Check to see what features the car uses to help avoid a car crash and what kind of safety features will protect me and my family if one occurs. The automotive industry has been hit hard with the recession and recall issues. Even the most trusted names have experienced both issues. But I think the most important improvements automakers are making is to their safety systems.

3) Do your homework!

Consumer Reports and Carfax are great resources to find out if cars have been involved in accidents, have had major water damage plus safety ratings, etc.

4) Fuel economy-

As you know, gas prices are going through the roof! I want a car that gets good gas mileage. Especially with gas prices at a record high!

Living in L.A. means many hours in the car. Good highway milage is a must for us. Our family cannot sacrifice those extra miles for a ride that is known for it’s luxuries. Although, there’s always some sort of compromise! Many car companies are embracing the environment. It’s trendy, but smart, to explore alternative fueling methods. This also gives you some other interesting options.

5) Valuing new or pre-owned (used)?

This basically comes down what you can afford. However, make sure you factor in the kind of warranties each offers. You do not want to spend that money “saved” on costly repairs that are not covered.

Moms, once you have done all the research and made your plan, think of how much easier and fun it will be to shop for your best option. Now if I can only decide what color to chose!

Good advice, there is a lot of information about cars online so I like to read reviews from professionals and people who own the car I’m looking to buy. I still feel that buying a car that is a couple of years old is a better deal than buying a new car.
