Wow that is amazing. Well I’m going to have to get a new toothbrush for my kids now. I tell my two year old girl that if she can brush and floss she can get a sticker. She loves stickers so much and we even have a chart. So she really gets two. one for her and one for her chart.
    Thank you for sharing this!

The fact that the bacteria in our mouths can be passed to our kids through our genes really fascinated me!

  3. Dr. Novy made a number of great suggesions and had some good insight. A few clarifications I would add here: #1 I recommend that parents brush their kids teeth until they can write in cursive. Getting excited about brushing is one thing, having them do it effectively is another and the fact is even if they try the vast majority of kids cannot. #2 It isn’t just the type of bacteria or counts that cause cavities. Cavities can form in the absence of bacteria, by just the sheer acid in many of the foods and drinks consumed. #3 the picture of the kid putting the toothpaste on his brush was WAY too much toothpaste. Please only use the amount the size of a pea. #4 Rather surprised no mention of sealants here. Very important that most kids get sealants to protect their teeth from getting cavities. No drilling… and makes the dental experience much more pleasant. #5 note how the dentist does not say that power toothbrushes prevent cavities, just “reduce plaque.” There is no evidence that they prevent cavities… although I recommend them as well, they are not requirements. Thanks for getting the word out!

Whats a great dentist! Fascinating about avoiding corn syrup especially and eating protein for good plaque. My son loves steak because of his father and now I know it’s good for his teeth as well!!
Thanks Jen and Barb, as always very insightful work.
